Rione Monticello - descrizione

Su SCOPRI GALLICANO la descrizione dei 3 Rioni.

Rione Monticello

The Monticello District

The Monticello District, whose colour is sky blue, is one of the three Districts of Gallicano and represents the Central-Northern part of the village. It takes its name from a small and isolated hill located in the centre of the chief town.
The main streets of the district are: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza della Posta, Via G. Pascoli, Piazza di Scarico, Via Serchio, Via IV Novembre, Via Beata Elena Guerra, Via I Maggio, Via della Repubblica, Via di Fondovalle, Via Debbiali, Via del Baradello, Via Leandro Puccetti, etc.
The Monticello District has not always had this name: before 1972, when the celebrations for our Patron Saint, San Jacopo, only consisted of sports competitions (football and relay races), it was called Dinamite.
Monticello can boast today an unbeatable record: it is the only District to have attended all the editions of the Palio di San Jacopo.
Another record which this district is very proud of are the 4 “Cenci” in a row won in the years 2006-2009.
In the District, in fact, people often talk about a “before” and an “after” 2006: the “before” is the time when Monticello could not win but was the most likeable, spontaneous and attractive District, in which improvising prevailed, the “after” is when the District renewed itself and found different and new motivations to win!
Every year, in August, the District organizes the “Festival on the Monticello”, in which the typical dishes of Gallicano (fogacce leve and minestrella, a typical soup), music, games for children, the briscola tournament and the tug of war are the main ingredients for wonderful nights.
Long live Monticello!
