The church was presumably built in the eleventh-twelfth centuries on the site of an earlier fortification. The Romanesque church has a single nave with apse and a facade in stonework. In 1349 it underwent restoration work, whilst in 1421 St. Mary's altar was set up, followed later on by St. Anthony's one.
The interior still preserves important holy objects such as a polychrome glazed terracotta representing the Madonna with the Child crowned by two angels and surrounded by several saints - a work by Andrea della Robbia (click here) - and a wooden crucifix, made by masters of the area of Lucca, dating back to the first half of the fourteenth century.
